The 1955 Fairchild Sports Car Races drew an estimated 15,000 spectators and over 200 of the best drivers in the country. Hagerstown's hotels were fully booked, and local service garages and car dealerships were packed with mechanics handling exotic sports cars like Ferraris, Jaguars, and Maseratis. One of the drivers, Phil Hill, even went on to become Americaâs first Formula One Champion in 1961.
