Experience the traditions of our region on our heritage tour. Founded in 1776, Washington County, MD is the first county in the U.S. to be named for George Washington. Steeped in American history, the Hagerstown area has a number of historical sites that showcase    generations of our hometown heritage.


Day 1

Journey to the summit of South Mountain, home to the Washington Monument, the first monument dedicated to the memory of George Washington.  A short drive away is Gathland State Park, the estate of George Alfred Townsend, who was the first to report Lincoln's assassination and the conspirators' trial. The park also features the famous War Correspondent’s Memorial Arch, a stone monument built as a tribute to army journalists and photographers.

Stop at Bonnie’s at the Red Byrd in Keedysville, MD for some country cooking. Then head to the Rural Heritage Museum to  experience what life was like throughout the history of Washington County from the progression from human powered farming to motorized era of farming. Museum highlights include four furnished Victorian era farm house rooms, Rural Heritage Village and Farmstead and an early Conestoga wagon. Venture to the Jonathan Hager House in City Park for a rare glimpse into the frontier home life of our founder, Jonathan Hager. Experience our connection with out Sister City, Wesel, Germany, by dining in a traditional German atmosphere at the Schmankerl Stube Bavarian Restaurant.


Day 2

Explore Fort Frederick, a stone fort that was the site of Maryland's frontier defense during the French and Indian War. On the way to the Fort stop at the rustic Wilson’s Country Store and stock up on classic general store goods before heading out to the frontier.

Have lunch in nearby Hancock, MD at BuddyLou’s Eats, Drinks & Antiques. After lunch be sure to stop for dessert at the Blue Goose Market before hitting the road! Maybe even take a fresh made pie to go!

Continue your afternoon discovering “what’s old is new again” at the Hancock Antique Mall. Return to Hagerstown and tour the Miller House & Gardens, headquarters of the Washington County Historical Society. Learn about the Ransom of Hagerstown during the Civil War and see an Impressive Civil War collection on display at the Miller House.
