Fresh Air, Fruit & Wine

Escape the every day woes with scenic views, fresh air and simple pleasures only found in historically beautiful Washington County, Maryland!

Fresh Air

Begin your day at great heights with a hike in the most elevated portion of the Appalachian Trail in Maryland.

Park your car at Pen Mar Park, northern starting point for the Maryland section of the Appalachian Trail. Head South to iconic views of Ravens Rock, Black Rock and Annapolis Rock.

Located  along the Maryland- Pennsylvania state line, Pen Mar was a resort  destination and prominent stop on the Western Maryland Railroad in the 20th century. Pen Mar Park opened in 1877 and was home to a scenic overlook, bustling resort with a dance hall, roller coaster and merry-go-round. While the resort is long gone, visitors can learn about the rich history of the region at the on-site exhibit hall.

Looking for more outdoor adventure? Visit Greenbrier State Park- relax lakeside or hit the Big Red Hiking Trail.

Fruit
The slopes of the Appalachian Mountains have served as a canvas for local farmers for generations. Our scenic byways are complimented with apple trees, blueberry bushes, grape varietals and much more.

Stop to enjoy the local flavors at Rinehart Orchards, an 80 year old tradition in Washington County.

Wine
Wind down your afternoon with a visit to Red Heifer Winery. Situated on a 20 acres of a family owned farm, Red Heifer takes a modern  approach to the regions rich agricultural history through vinification of local grown fruits. Sit down with a glass of Red Heifer wine or perhaps a bottle while continuing to enjoy fresh mountain air.

After a long day full of adventure, go to downtown Hagerstown for a relaxing evening at Pretzel Pizza Creations which takes an artful twist on classic pretzel dough.
