Steeped in American history, the Hagerstown area has a number of historical sites that showcase generations of our hometown heritage. Day 1 Journey to the summit of South Mountain, home to the Washington Monument, the first monument dedicated to the memory of George Washington. A short drive away is Gathland State Park, the estate of George Alfred Townsend, who was the first to report Lincoln's assassination and the conspirators' trial.
